Abstract
Child migration from Great Britain has had a long history, particularly migration to Canada. In England under the 1834 Poor Law, local Boards of Guardians assumed responsibility for care and education of children of the poor. By the early 1900's it has been estimated of the 70000 to 80000 children under the jurisdiction of the Poor Law, less than one third were in workhouses, one third were in district and residential schools and cottage homes, and about a fifth were in Homes of voluntary organisations.
