Abstract
En petits nombres, tout d’abord pendant la Révolution américaine (1775-1781) et à la suite de l’Insurrection de 1837-1838 au Bas-Canada, mais surtout par milliers entre la Guerre de Sécession américaine (1861-1865) et la Grande Dépression des années 1930, des Québécois à la recherche d’une meilleure vie s’établissent en Nouvelle-Angleterre. De nos jours, leurs descendants, les Franco-Américains, se chiffrent à plus de trois millions, soit presque la moitié de la population actuelle du Québec. En vue de sauvegarder et de promouvoir avec plus ou moins de succès la langue française et la culture franco-américaine, tout en s’intégrant à la vie étatsunienne, on fonde des institutions de tout genre. Professeure émérite de français, auteure, traductrice, présidente de la Fédération féminine franco-américaine et directrice fondatrice de l’Institut français d’Assumption College, Claire Quintal figure parmi ces personnages dynamiques à qui l’on doit ce miracle qu’est la minorité francophone toujours en existence en Nouvelle-Angleterre aujourd’hui.
