En temps de paix, en Europe, la chevre fait majoritairement partie de la basse-cour et donc de l'ecnomie feminine. En temps de guerre et plus particulierement lors de celle de 14-18, quels sont les usages de la gent caprine -vivante ou morte- passee du cote masculin? L'usage symbolique du bouc est ambivalent: positif comme mascotte institutionnelle de regiments canadiens ou britanniques, ou negatif pour personnifier l'ennemi, le Boche. Mais la multiplication des chevres adoptees comme mascottes occasionnelles, et ce dans toutes les armees, depasse le symbolique. La chevre permet ainsi aux soldats de renouer avec le vivant, avec les animaux de leur ferme, avec le monde familial et feminin, avec la paix; une presence de substitution au sens reel et metaphorique. La deuxieme partie de l'etude est consacree a un phenomene relevant du pittoresque et de l'exceptionnel: l'importation de dizaines de milliers de chevres afin de subvenir a la nourriture rituelle des troupes anglo-indiennes ou hindoues, tout comme les troupes indigenes.
