A ciencia politica contemporânea e o produto de um conjunto de reflexoes e de analises dos fenomenos politicos amadurecidos ao longo da experiencia politica ocidental. O ajustamento da ciencia politica para o estudo da accao politica, em particular; do Estado, abriu um novo sector de estudos que em sentido lato, pode ser definido como a analise das politicas publicas. Novas leituras dos conceitos tradicionais aliadas a aplicacao de metodologias e de uma semântica propria, fez emergir novos conceitos que hoje se expandem, inclusive, ao estudo das relacoes internacionais.
