Abstract
Le roman d’Anne Hébert publié en 1975, rythmé par les antiennes et prières de la messe latine, nous donne à entendre de longs passages du rituel d’exorcisme pratiqué dans le diocèse de Québec dès 1703, et s’achève sur la litanie de la Vierge. Tout ce fonds catholique qui refait surface et fragmente la prose narrative découpée en cinquante-quatre petits chapitres s’impose à l’oreille du lecteur, remontant d’un passé encore récent et pourtant désormais étranger. Le roman se construit dans l’alternance de deux foyers temporels enchâssés l’un dans l’autre, pratiquant la navette entre les années quarante de l’enfermement de soeur Julie au couvent, et les années trente de l’enfermement familial de son enfance à la cabane où se déroulent les sabbats dominés par l’inceste. Il s’agit d’analyser la complicité entre l’Église et la sorcellerie que le roman d’Hébert révèle. Les enfants du sabbat met en fiction un versant de l’histoire catholique dans ce qu’il engendre de corps pulsionnel, à l’envers — autant dire indissociable — du corps christique de l’eucharistie.
