Abstract
O objeto de estudo deste artigo é o semiárido brasileiro comumente conhecido como sertão. Por ser uma região com condições climáticas caracterizadas por regime hídrico irregular, as secas são periódicas. Entretanto, como cerca de 58% da população brasileira em situação de pobreza habita na região semiárida, associou-se, historicamente, que a pobreza é consequência das secas. Posto isto, objetiva-se aqui analisar a gestão territorial implementada do semiárido, buscando entender a ação estatal e da sociedade civil organizada. Para isso, se fez uso de um referencial teórico calcado na visão do Estado, nas representações territoriais e nas discussões de autores brasileiros que estudam o semiárido. Foi possível identificar as representações territoriais que nortearam o modelo de gestão do território semiárido brasileiros durante o período 1985‑2016, bem como aponta-se a necessidade de uma possível superação desse modelo que, até o momento, não logrou sucesso.
