Abstract
En 2009, juste un an après la mort d’Aimé Césaire, Dany Laferrière publie L’énigme du retour, qui annonce dès l’exergue l’importance du poète martiniquais dans le roman. Avec ce livre, l’écrivain effectue une sorte de « retour aux pères », à la fois au père biologique absent de son oeuvre et au père de la littérature antillaise remis en question, voire ridiculisé ailleurs. En retraçant la relation à ces deux figures paternelles dans L’énigme et dans d’autres écrits de Laferrière, l’article propose d’examiner le rapport ambivalent du narrateur, qui se place sous le double signe de la quête du père et de la résistance face à la transmission. De fait, ce qui se présente d’abord comme un « retour aux pères » à travers le voyage au pays natal s’avère finalement être un détour par lequel le narrateur exprime son refus de l’héritage paternel, que ce soit celui du destin symbolisé par la valise du père ou le legs littéraire de l’auteur du célèbre Cahier d’un retour au pays natal.
