Abstract
Cet article cherche à répondre à certaines questions quant aux référents identitaires et politiques d’un groupe autochtone, notamment au sujet de l’autodéfinition du groupe et de son rapport au territoire. L’objectif est ici de démontrer la fluidité des identités communes autochtones et leur impact sur les revendications politiques. L’auteur a choisi d’adopter une perspective ethnosymboliste de la nation, qui tient compte de l’importance d’éléments subjectifs chez des nations en constante mutation. Si les groupes autochtones se réfèrent effectivement à des éléments culturels et ethniques forts, ils constituent des ensembles en constante évolution, une dynamique qui n’est que peu reconnue par les gouvernements lors de la négociation d’ententes d’autonomie gouvernementale, bien qu’un espace théorique existe pour intégrer une telle conception. Pour cerner cette dynamique, l’auteur a choisi de procéder à des entrevues au sein d’un groupe autochtone, les Innus au Québec.
