Abstract
Dans les salles du musée du Louvre, les conservateurs faisaient face à des contraintes multiples : espace limité en surface, en hauteur, en répartition des pièces par l’architecture d’un palais déjà construit ; lumière latérale venue de fenêtres sur un seul côté ; corpus originel préexistant ; enrichissements multiples, conditionnés par la curiosité et l’appétit des conservateurs, le goût des donateurs, ou les versements du musée du Luxembourg. Le département des Sculptures était alors divisé entre deux entités, Moyen Âge et Renaissance dans l’aile sud de la cour Carrée, Temps modernes dans l’aile ouest. Durant la période considérée, la conservation a cherché à étendre son domaine par un grignotage d’espaces nouveaux, afin de présenter les collections médiévales d’une part et les œuvres de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle d’autre part.
