Issu d’un travail de doctorat ancré dans la Völkerkunde et l’histoire des sciences, cet ouvrage, édité par l’Académie des sciences autrichiennes, est centré sur la figure scientifique méconnue de Johann Natterer (1787-1843), qui fut l’un des premiers Européens à explorer le Brésil. Pendant 18 ans, de 1817 à 1836, celui qui ne fut ni un nouvel Humboldt ni un universitaire, enrichit sans relâche ses collections zoologiques, botaniques, minéralogiques et ethnographiques pour le compte du cabinet...
