Abstract
Depuis sa fondation au XVIIe siècle, et ce, jusqu’au XIXe siècle, la communauté et la nation de Kahnawake ont été régies par leurs propres lois et gouvernées par leurs propres dirigeants. Lors des dernières décennies du XIXe siècle, la législation fédérale a cependant dépouillé les chefs de Kahnawake de plusieurs de leurs pouvoirs et ainsi renforcé la position du Département des affaires indiennes. Cet article examine les pressions extérieures qui ont causé la dégradation de la gouvernance territoriale à Kahnawake, menant à une crise du bois au cours des années 1870. Il soutient que ces pressions extérieures ont généré un contexte dans lequel les dirigeants locaux n’ont plus été en mesure de gouverner efficacement et qui fut à la source d’une confusion considérable quant à savoir qui était réellement en charge et quelles lois étaient appliquées. Les Mohawks ont compris que leur nation était sérieusement mise en péril et ont usé de différentes stratégies afin de tenter de maintenir leurs propres lois et gouvernements.
