Abstract
Les interprétations données par des immigrants et des immigrantes des raisons qui les ont amenés à laisser leur pays d’origine sont influencées par leurs origines sociales en même temps qu’elles sont susceptibles de varier avec le temps. L’auteur montre comment, loin de constituer des catégories étanches, les différents motifs migratoires s’enchevêtrent les uns les autres. Il souligne certaines différences dans la formulation des raisons de départ, selon le sexe et l’appartenance de classe au Québec, d’un groupe d’immigrants et d’immigrantes haïtiens installés à Montréal.
