tulisan ini hendak membahas: pertama, bagaimana perubahan yang terjadi di UIN Sunan Ampel terkait dengan kemitraan universitas dengan masyarakat; kedua, bagaimana upaya mengawal kemitraan universitas dengan masyarakat; dan ketiga, pelajaran berharga apa yang di dapat dalam proses pengawalan kemitraan universitas dengan masyarakat. Berdasarkan pengalaman yang telah dilakukan diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa perubahan yang terjadi di UINSA adalah tidak saja pada aspek kelembagaan tetapi dirumuskannya kembali jati diri universitas ditengah kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara melalui penemuan visi yang menjadi keunggulan UINSA yaitu sebagai universitas yang dekat dan saling memberi manfaat bagi masyarakat yang dituangkan dalam rencana strategis kemitraan universitas dengan masyarakat yang sudah disahkan tahun 2014. Pengawalan renstra KUM melalui pendekatan partisipatoris dan appreciative inquiry dengan melibatkan multistakeholder dalam bentuk workshop dan diskusi yang diselenggarakan mulai dari tingkat kementerian sampai tingkat universitas, dengan didampingi resource person sebagai fasilitator Mary Coyle dari Frank Mc Kenna Center for Leadership, St. Francis Xavier University Canada. Dari proses ini beberapa pengalaman berharga didapatkan seperti perlunya upaya sosialisasi terus menerus agar pemahaman holistik tentang renstra UCE ini didapatkan semua pihak yang terlibat, perlunya tim yang secara khusus mengawal ini , dan dapat lebih memahami perbedaan yang ada dari proses pengawalan tersebut.
