Abstract
This is the fifth volume in Ashgate's innovative series "The History of Medicine in Context."In it Angela Montford revisits a series of findings that other scholars have previously addressed, but she goes further, integrating their questions into a fascinating overview of larger and very pertinent themes concerning medieval medicine.Proposing to investigate the Friars' involvement with medicine, she uses the Dominicans and Franciscans as a representative medieval group to open a window on the institutional care for the ordinary patient in the 13th and 14th centuries.Using the imposing convents of the two orders in Bologna, Italy as her case study, Professor Montford begins by going to their account books seeking entries concerning the convent infirmaries or medical expenses.She makes particularly astute use of the existent Dominican records-their constitution, the acts adopted by the General and Provincial Chapters, the ordinances passed to ress/doi/pdf/10.
