Abstract
En juillet 2000, j’ai eu la chance unique de m’entretenir avec Pauline Murillo, une personne âgée de la réserve San Manuel située en Californie du Sud, et femme de descendance amérindienne Serrano et Cahuilla. Le père et le grand-père de Pauline Murillo étaient des «guérisseurs», formés à soigner les affections physiques, spirituelles et mentales selon les traditions ancestrales de leur peuple. Au cours de l’entretien, Pauline Murillo m’a confié que sa mère, Martha Manuel Chacon, contracta un jour une «spirit medicine» et tomba gravement malade. Elle explique que Martha et son cousin, Vincent, jouaient un jour dans la réserve, quand un guérisseur prévint les enfants d’éviter un liquide se trouvant dans un endroit proche, dans lequel il avait «laissé quelque chose pour quelqu’un d’autre». Curieux, les enfants allèrent examiner la chose de plus près, en conséquence de quoi, Martha contracta une forte fièvre et tomba mortellement malade. Les parents de Martha et sa famille l’emmenèrent à San Bernardino consulter un médecin qui la soigna, mais ne put faire tomber la fièvre. La famille de Martha l’emmena donc à Palm Springs, en Californie, où un Cahuilla, Pedro Chino, la guérit. Au cours du traitement, Martha vit de minuscules petits hommes courir autour de son corps, concourant au processus de guérison. Chino finit par extraire un petit objet de la jambe de Martha, mettant ainsi fin à son épreuve.
