AN ANSYS-BASED 3-DIMENSIONAL THERMOMECHANICAL MODEL OF A CANDU FUEL PIN

Abstract
This article describes the current status of a 3-dimensional thermomechanical model developed for a CANDU fuel element (pin). The model has been developed using ANSYS finite-element software and simulates the fuel pellets and sheath (as separate entities) and endcaps. The model simulates contact between the solid components: between individual pellets, between the pellets and the sheath, and between the end pellet and the endcap. The model simulates both steady-state and transient conditions and incorporates both thermal and mechanical solutions. The model can be applied to most reactor fuel designs, including light-water reactor fuels and conceptual designs, such as annular fuel. The model has been tested against several fuel behavior experiments conducted at the Chalk River Laboratories, which has provided insight into the modelling of Zircaloy-4 creep behaviour. Applications include the determination of fuel pin flexural rigidity and bowing, the modelling of graphite disk fuel, and 2 sag experiments.
