Beyond the Bricks and Mortar: The Role of Residences in Opening Doors to Nursing Education and Practice

Abstract
The stand-alone women’s residences played an important role in advancing women’s history and professional nursing. The nurses’ residence represents a part of women’s struggle for a respected occupation. The women’s movement, in the late 1800s, promoted the concept of the separate women’s residence as a place for women to be free of domestic responsibilities in order to pursue higher education. Nursing leaders joined this movement to promote improved living and learning conditions for pupil nurses who were often housed within the hospital buildings. This paper identifies the added benefit of residence life by examining the networks of lifelong professional ties and friendships that resulted from the nursing residence experience.
