Cet article propose une réflexion, par moments grinçante, sur les défis théoriques et pratiques d’une discipline à prétention scientifique. Se méfiant des grands problèmes éternisés de l’épistémologie et de la méthodologie des sciences sociales – ainsi que de la complaisante position de surplomb qu’ils autorisent –, l’auteur préfère concentrer ses analyses sur les problématiques les plus ordinairement structurantes de l’enquête sociologique. La nécessité d’adhérer à une forme de cumulativité en est une. Il est important de s’y référer car cet idéal régulateur est malmené, voire anéanti par la tentation, encore si présente, de réinventer la roue par la grâce de « nouvelles » terminologies et théories. L’auteur ne s’arrête pas à la critique et propose d’expliquer cette fuite en avant.
