Abstract
La période entre 1850 et 1900 fut déterminante dans l’évolution de la lecture publique au Québec. Montréal a eu sa première bibliothèque francophone, publique et laïque dès 1844 et celle-ci devint un succès auprès du public au cours des années 1870. Certaines associations littéraires ont répété l’expérience à une échelle plus restreinte ailleurs au Québec. La création des associations littéraires laïques, provoqua la formation d’institutions semblables parrainées par les communautés religieuses. La lecture publique y était sans doute limitée aux livres jugés sains au plan moral, mais la diffusion du livre, sa démocratisation au sens de son rayonnement social, fut considérable.
