Abstract
En 1881, le linguiste et collectionneur Alphonse Pinart se rend à Santa Fe, capitale du Nouveau-Mexique. Dans cette ville du Sud-Ouest américain, où se développe l’installation des Occidentaux, le tourisme et l’acculturation des populations amérindiennes locales, un marchand du nom d’Aaron Gold propose à la vente des petites figurines en céramiques, réalisées par les Amérindiens pueblo dans l’unique but d’être acquises par les Occidentaux. Le commerce de curios, objets amérindiens à destination des touristes, vient de débuter, et Alphonse Pinart y succombe. Cet article propose de revenir sur ce phénomène des curios dans le Sud-Ouest des États-Unis, phénomène culturel né de la rencontre des Amérindiens, des marchands et des touristes. Il présentera également l’importante collection d’objets touristiques pueblo rapportée en France par Alphonse Pinart et conservée au musée du quai Branly.
