Ces ftes, plus sages que ce que l'usage du mot laisse entendre, taient marques par de grands banquets domestiques o les esclaves, profitant des liberts de dcembre comme l'crivait le pote Horace 1 , mangeaient la table de leur matre. Les Saturnales (qui duraient de un plusieurs jours selon les poques, allant du 17 dcembre au 23 dans sa plus grande extension), taient connues Rome depuis un temps immmorial. Dans une ambiance de paix, de partage et de fraternit 2 , c'tait une priode de trve marque par un temps d'arrt dans les affaires tant publiques que prives o devaient cesser tout procs et mme toute dispute individuelle 3 .
