Abstract
Molenbeek-Saint-Jean est un village des environs de Bruxelles qui, depuis 1800, s’est progressivement urbanisé, jusqu’à faire partie intégrante de la capitale. La toponymie, en étudiant les noms et surnoms donnés par les habitants à leurs lieux de vie nous en montre les mutations : urbanisation, industrialisation, déclin économique, migrations et évolution de l’emploi des langues. C’est toute l’histoire d’une région qui se déroule sous nos yeux au travers des perceptions et mentalités, avec les ambitions et fiertés de ses habitants, les tensions entre populations et l’évolution des réalités sociales.
