M any teachers have been encouraging their stu-dents to use their creativity and invent their own rep-resentations of music. Interestingly, these representa-tions are proving to be far more complex than previ-ously thought (Bamberger, 1982). This article reviews the research literature on invented representations of music and discusses how the latter might help music teachers evaluate their students ' cognition of music. Research in the development of music cognition is often based on tests of an auditory-perceptual nature. These tests normally include a listening task followed by an observation of children's and adults ' responses to the music. Such tests have shed light on some aspects of children's and adults ' understanding of music by investigating their reproduction of rhythmic or melodic patterns (Gerard & Auxiette, 1988; Sims, 1995), their identification of changes in musical structure such as pitch, rhythm, and/or harmony
