Abstract
Dit artikel bestudeert de muziekpraktijken van de Gnawa in Brussel vanuit de etnomusicologie. De Gnawa behoren tot een gemeenschap die afkomstig is uit Marokko. Ze hebben in hun muziekpraktijken nieuwe elementen geïntegreerd, wat zou kunnen worden verklaard door hun migratie naar het buitenland. Meer nog, de vergelijking met de situatie van andere diaspora wijst erop dat de situatie in Brussel uniek is. Men stelt niet alleen wijzigingen in de methodes om de muziek aan te leren en de combinatie van profane met rituele muziek vast, maar ook een diversificatie van de contexten waarin de Gnawa optreden. Dat brengt de Gnawa-muzikanten ertoe zich andere Marokkaanse muziekstijlen eigen te maken en ze aarzelen niet om daar inspiratie in te vinden voor hun gnawa-repertoire, dat in theorie niet openstaat voor de integratie van externe elementen. De Brusselse Gnawa betreuren niet dat ze door de migratie aan authenticiteit zouden hebben ingeboet, maar ze herdefiniëren hun muziekpraktijken en hun werkingswijzen door die aan te passen aan hun nieuwe leefomgeving. Zodoende ontwikkelen ze continu hun identiteit en brengen ze tegelijk een zeer specifiek cultureel en sociaal erfgoed tot stand op nieuwe grondgebieden.
