Abstract
'Enlightenment' is a contested concept among contemporary historians. How did the so-called Dutch Enlightenment contribute to the transformation of the political culture in the Dutch Republic during the last quarter of the eighteenth century? This case-study on the province of Friesland shows the important contribution of Mennonite merchants and intellectuals to the public debate in Friesland on the American Revolution, the formation of civic militias and the (failed) Patriot Revolution in this province in September 1787.
