En soi, les calculs secrets de tout imposteur ont pour objectif de manipuler autrui et de le convaincre à croire vrai ce qui ne l’est pas. Dans la nouvelle « Comment réussir sa vie » de Paul Savoie (L’empire des rôdeurs, 2004) tout autant que dans le roman La critique (2012) de Céline Forcier, l’imposture consiste chez le protagoniste à s’arroger le rôle d’écrivain sans toutefois se soumettre à la critique, c’est-à-dire à publier un texte en passant outre les règles du monde de l’édition. Savoie et Forcier dressent ainsi le portrait complexe, ni approbateur ni antipathique, d’auteurs isolés mais opiniâtres. Dans une critique sous-jacente, ils n’épargnent pas non plus les excès et autres dysfonctionnements de l’institution littéraire. Au-delà de destins particuliers, « Comment réussir sa vie » et La critique se font surtout l’écho de questions et thèmes volontiers abordés dans l’écriture en milieu minoritaire. L’article entreprend de déterminer dans quelle mesure ces deux textes explorent diverses facettes de la figure de l’écrivain franco-ontarien.
