Abstract
Les recherches des années récentes ont remis en lumière l’un des aspects durablement sous-évalué de la violence nazie : la spoliation à travers toute l’Europe, et singulièrement en France, de milliers (de millions) de biens culturels. La mémoire collective avait parfois retenu celle des œuvres d’art, et notamment des peintures, au poids symbolique toujours premier dans les imaginaires. Mais le vol (ou la destruction, c’est selon) de tableaux ne fut pas le seul signe de la volonté de puissance nazie sur les choses de l’âme et de l’esprit : sculptures, objets d’art, œuvres graphiques, mobiliers, instruments de musique, archives, livres furent pourchassés avec autant de détermination que le furent ceux qui les possédaient. Ces biens furent bien souvent saisis ensemble, prenant, après de multiples tris qui les démembraient, voire les détruisaient, le chemin de l’Allemagne, stockés ou abandonnés en France quand ils ne paraissaient pas essentiels aux occupants.
