Abstract
Norse-Icelandic literature is perhaps more than ever an object of intense study in the two Germanies, Austria, and Switzerland. The production is indeed so abundant that scholars in North America may find it hard to keep up, and we have therefore undertaken to provide a brief survey of recent developments. We concentrate on the period 198587, dipping back occasionally when it seemed advisable to round out the picture. Our material is based on an inquiry circulated to our Austrian, German, and Swiss colleagues in July of 1987. We are grateful to them for very full and helpful responses but are conscious that our coverage is nonetheless incomplete. We apologize for the inevitable oversights but think that even a partial review may be of service. The following was written in July of 1988 and therefore does not include anything that came to our attention after that date.
