Cet article rend compte d’une recherche dont l’objectif est d’étudier l’activité réelle du maître de stage dans sa pratique d’accompagnement auprès d’un enseignant débutant, dans le secondaire en France. Le cadre de la clinique de l’activité a été choisi pour appréhender le sens et l’efficience de l’activité du maître de stage, en situation de travail. Quinze entretiens, de type instruction au sosie , ont été menés dans quatre disciplines d’enseignement. Une analyse de contenu des verbatims fait apparaitre neuf facettes structurant cette fonction, traversées de huit dilemmes. L’analyse des éléments constitutifs de l’activité dans ces dilemmes, à travers une étude de cas, révèle que le maître de stage oriente son activité d’accompagnement sans véritables repères professionnels dans cette fonction. À partir d’une conceptualisation développementale du métier qui repose sur un équilibre entre quatre instances : personnelle, interpersonnelle, transpersonnelle, et impersonnelle, un déficit des deux dernières apparaît, laissant présager des difficultés de développement de l’activité.
