Abstract
本稿は，アメリカ鉄道会社における複会計システムの事例としてNew York, Ontario and Western Railway Company（以下NYOW鉄道会社と略称）を俎上にのせ，同社の年次報告書を分析・検討している。同社の複会計システムは，1868年鉄道規制法の第1スケジュールで要求された15種類の計算書にほぼ対応しており，その勘定体系を踏襲するものであった。ただし一般貸借対照表は，鉄道規制法と異なり通常の形式で作成されており，そこには資本勘定残高が振り替えられていないことから，複会計の形式を踏襲しながらも資本勘定は勘定体系から独立したものであった。実際に資本勘定は，1903年からは非開示となっている。\n複会計システムを採用した背景には，ロンドンやアムステルダムを中心とした外国人投資家の存在があった。1895年の年次報告書では，株式の半数以上が外国人に所有されているとしており，このような状況が会計報告書の採用に影響を与えた。しかしながら1905年には，NYOW鉄道会社の外国人株主は12％まで低下している。資本勘定が非開示となる時期と併せて考えると，外国人株主の減少とともに報告対象の主眼がイギリス人株主からアメリカ人株主に転換し，複会計から通常の勘定体系への移行が始まったと考えられる。
