Trois « Cahiers de lecture » d’André Belleau sont conservés au Service des archives et de gestion des documents de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, où il a enseigné de 1969 à sa mort en 1986. Sauf pour des extraits parus en 1995, ces textes, qui comptent un peu plus de soixante mille mots, sont inédits. Quelques semaines ou mois avant de mourir, Belleau a relu les notes qu’il avait rassemblées depuis 1963. Il ne les a pas réorganisées, réécrites, transformées en profondeur, mais il a voulu s’y replonger et y laisser la trace, difficilement, d’une (re)lecture. Corrigeant, précisant, proposant des renvois, un auteur-lecteur arrêtait son texte une dernière fois. Pour lui-même ? Pour d’autres ? Mais qu’est-ce que ces « Cahiers » ? Quelle place occupent-ils par rapport aux publications, études ou essais, d’André Belleau ? Que révèlent-ils de l’atelier de l’écrivain ? C’est à ces questions que l’article s’attache à répondre.
