Noëlle Charpentier présente les Archives Notman, un important ensemble de photographies, négatifs et matériel photographiques entreposé au musée McCord d’Histoire canadienne à Montréal. Deux conservateurs ont travaillé à leur préservation et à leur utilisation : Stanley G. Triggs et Hélène Samson. Tout deux ont orchestré, au cours de leur mandat, une activité scientifique intégrant un discours spécifique et propre à leur époque. Objet phare à la personnalité multiple, les Archives Notman ont servi plusieurs propos. Si nous avons décidé de les placer dans la catégorie disciplinaire c’est que les discours se font et se défont et qu’il est essentiel de considérer le plus actuel dans l’explication de la valorisation d’un objet au détriment d’autres. Stanley Triggs, en s’entourant d’enseignants, étudiants et chercheurs pour la plupart anglophones, a encensé la forte valeur identitaire que pouvaient avoir les Archives pour cette classe sociale, descendante anonyme de l’élite montréalaise figurant sur les photographies. C’est bien la preuve que le discours du musée évolue en fonction du climat politique : les Archives Notman servent tout d’abord la cause anglophone puis, dans les années 1970 et 1980, les francophones découvrent le potentiel de ces documents picturaux et les exploitent à leur tour. Hélène Samson a décidé de redéployer les Archives et le discours autour de l’objet change. Samson se concentre sur les valeurs historique et scientifique des Archives. En permettant la réutilisation des photographies par des artistes contemporains, elle met l’accent sur les méthodes et procédés utilisés par le photographe, les inventions que la discipline lui doit, son style et sa technique mais aussi le matériel accompagnant les photographies proprement dites. S’il est aisé de dire que les Archives Notman sont un support de la mémoire et de l’identité de Montréal, Charpentier les considère d’abord comme une intarissable source de documentation historique et technique.
