Au Québec comme dans bien d’autres pays (y compris la France et la Belgique), le cadre juridique qui régit la médecine confère aux médecins un monopole en matière de santé et rend les médecines « douces » illégales. Ce monopole, dont la portée est examinée, brime le droit de la population de disposer librement de sa santé et de chercher remède à ses maux ailleurs que dans la médecine allopathique, souvent inefficace. En tentant vainement d’interdire les médecines douces plutôt que de les réglementer, le cadre juridique ne protège pas le public contre les thérapeutes incompétents ou profiteurs, et le prive de l’information qui lui permettrait de reconnaître les thérapies et les thérapeutes bénéfiques. Une réforme s’impose, dont les principes directeurs sont suggérés.
