Abstract
CONCLUSIONS: It appears that there are important changes during lung development in the 16:0/14:0-PC fraction of pulmonary surfactant which may be important in alveolarization.Patients who went on to develop CLD had lower levels of 16:0/14:0PC immediately following intubation compared to patients who did not have CLD.Tracheal aspirate for 16:0/14:0PC may therefore represent an important and non-invasive test that can be used clinically to aid in the prediction of which babies are at highest risk for CLD as well as to aid in ongoing management decisions such as altering ventilation strategies.
