Through the analysis of the scattering from a single-layer infinite periodic array of rectangular microstrip patches, the reflection phase properties of a line-source-fed microstrip reflectarray is analyzed for broadside radiation. In this study, the reflectarray with the thick foam substrate (ε <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">r</inf> = 1.03) demonstrates relatively better radiation characteristics over a wide bandwidth, as compared to that with the thin substrate (ε <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">r</sup> = 2.5), which performs relatively well for narrowband applications.
