Este artículo busca establecer una reflexión sobre la producción cultural hecha por los viajeros a la región ecuatorial durante la segunda parte del siglo XVIII y primera del XIX, a partir del análisis de Marie Louis Pratt sobre la reconfiguración de lo que ella ha llamado «conciencia planetaria». Si tanto la expedición conocida como La Condamine, así como la posterior expedición de Humboldt, figuran entre las más importantes narrativas de científicos viajeros, su influencia derivó en otros ámbitos, entre ellos, en las clásicas representaciones del paisaje y de la identidad Latinoamericana. Este análisis considera el desarrollo histórico de la noción de «paisaje», rastreando el surgimiento de este concepto en una tensión entre el discurso científico y el estético, al inicio del romanticismo y demostrando cómo éste sigue condicionando nuestra idea sobre el paisaje equinoccial-andino. En este sentido, la equinoccialidad puede ser leída como un proceso histórico mediante el cual se articula un imaginario de la naturaleza, es decir, una apropiación del territorio mediante la construcción de una representación del paisaje.
