Abstract
The Vancouver, Canada-based practice of Jay Hirabayashi is described. A former competitive skier, Hirabayashi began dance classes at the age of 30 to rehabilitate his leg after a ski injury. He went on to study numerous dance forms, culminating in intensive study of butoh both in Canada and Japan. Hirabayashi has choreographed numerous pieces, including Rage , a work for 15 taiko drummers, 3 dancers, a martial artist, and a stiltwalker that received standing ovations at the 1987 Asia Pacific Festival and the 1987 Canada Dance Festival. Also drawn to directing and administrating, Hirabayashi founded both Kokoro Dance company, and the Vancouver International Dance Festival with his wife, the dancer/choreographer Barbara Bourget. He continues to perform, teach, and direct both organizations. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
