Cet article se propose de réfléchir sur la violence, la mort et le sang dans La Jongleuse (1900) de Rachilde et sur le rapport de ces motifs avec l’amour, le sacré et l’art. Il montre que, dans ce roman, la double face de la déesse de l’amour (chtonienne et cruelle ou céleste et bienveillante) sert à illustrer la nature ambiguë de l’art et de l’artiste tiraillé entre vie et mort, entre le débordement de la violence créative et les restreintes formelles. Cette ambiguïté s’exprime dans une passion brûlante qui dépasse les limites humaines et qui célèbre la mort et la violence au détriment non seulement d’une vie médiocre mais aussi de la vie humaine en général.
