Ellis apparaît dans le monde de la photo malgache. Il a un élève, Parrett, qui lui sert de petite main et poursuit son travail durant une génération entière. Avant 1890, principalement dans la capitale, quelques photographes malgaches ont percé, dont Ratsimamanga. Durant ce temps, les Norvégiens ont œuvré du côté d’Antsirabé. Puis dès 1896, c’est le déferlement de la photo militaire française. Chacun achète des tirages au SGM et aux praticiens civils des studios. Jusqu’en 1914, Malgaches et Français font un travail considérable qui se tarit après la guerre. L’académisme se fait jour jusqu’en 1940.
