Including losses in modeling of transmission lines with electromagnetic bandgap reference planes for global simulation of digital circuits

Abstract
In the present paper, a lumped element equivalent circuit including frequency dependent losses is developed to model a transmission line that is routed above an electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure. The EBG is used as a power/ground plane in the power distribution network of a typical digital circuit. The developed model for the transmission line is ported into the simulation testbench for analysis of digital CMOS circuits, and the quality of data transmission in the line is examined by generating the eye-diagram at 2.5 Gb/s data rate.
