Abstract
Pourquoi l’olivier d’Olympie, dont le feuillage servait à tresser les couronnes des vainqueurs, provient-il du pays des Hyperboréens ? Pour répondre à cette question, nous étudierons l’élaboration du mythe chez Pindare (III e Olympique ) et le replacerons dans son contexte historique. Les mythiques Hyperboréens, dont la contrée se situe au-delà du Vent du Nord, sont insensibles à l’hiver. Ils ne sont davantage pas associés à la vieillesse et la mort, symboles hivernaux typiques avant et après Pindare. Ainsi l’origine de l’olivier d’Olympie s’explique par le climat tempéré du pays des Hyperboréens et par la félicité divine qui en résultait. Puisque cet olivier-là était libre de toute association avec l’hiver, son feuillage devint l’emblème idéal de la gloire des vainqueurs olympiques, immortelle.
