Le 30 avril 2016, l’événement Cripping the Stage: A Disability Arts Cabaret mettait en vedette « des artistes handicapés faisant figure de pionniers au Canada et au Royaume-Uni ». Animé par Alex Bulmer and Mat Fraser, l’événement avait comme projet de placer « des interprètes handicapés au devant de la scène pour célébrer le symposium de trois jours intitulé Cripping the Arts, présenté par Tangled Art + Disability en vue de promouvoir la pratique des artistes handicapés ou sourds au Canada et d’appuyer le dynamisme de la culture canadienne » (« Cripping »).1 Comme le démontre le présent numéro, cet événement d’envergure internationale figure parmi toute une série d’initiatives du théâtre pour personnes en situation de handicap qui ont eu lieu au cours des saisons 2015 et 2016. Pendant cette même période, des artistes du théâtre pour personnes handicapées ont travaillé au Centre national des Arts, au Festival Stratford, à l’École des beaux-arts de Banff, au Playwrights Theatre Centre, au Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal et au Festival Luminato. Ce numéro paraît donc à un moment d’effervescence remarquable pour ce genre de théâtre au Canada. Ces cinq dernières années, des institutions nationales et des organismes subventionnaires ont voulu prendre en compte et encourager un dialogue entre les praticiens et les artistes du théâtre pour personnes handicapées. À titre d’exemple, le Conseil des arts du Canada annonçait en 2012 l’adoption d’une stratégie d’accès et d’égalité à l’intention des artistes handicapés ou sourds. L’initiative signalait une nouvelle orientation au chapitre du financement et de l’appui accordé par le CAC à « l’art à part entière » et prenait acte du fait que « les arts des artistes handicapés ou sourds représentent un secteur et des pratiques de grande importance dans le milieu artistique canadien et qu’il faut soutenir, promouvoir et favoriser son évolution » (Conseil des arts du Canada, « Sommaire »).
