Abstract
This chapter reviews the main steam methane reforming (SMR) process, as well as widespread attempts to improve the process by such measures as partial oxidation (POX), autothermal operation, hydrogen-permeable membranes, and sorbent-enhanced reforming. Dry reforming has been shown to be mechanistically analogous to steam reforming, with the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction virtually reaching equilibrium. Combined endothermic CO2 reforming and exothermic POX reactions reduce the need for heat transfer surfaces and assists in achieving high energy efficiency, requiring little or no external energy, with safer operation than POX of methane alone. This is similar to combining SMR with POX of methane, commonly referred to as autothermal reforming (ATR). ATR is carried out in the presence of a catalyst which controls the reaction pathways, thereby playing a role in determining the relative extents of the oxidation and steam reforming reactions.
