Abstract
Dans les deux lettres où il décrit ses villas de Laurentum ( Ep. II, 17) et de Tifernum (V, 6), Pline le Jeune y fait souvent allusion en tant que bâtiments d’usage saisonnier. La villa de Laurentum est davantage décrite comme une résidence d’hiver alors que celle de Tifernum est une retraite d’été. Or. une étude détaillée de ces lettres indique que les séjours de Pline dans ces deux propriétés ne correspondaient pas strictement à certaines saisons: ces deux villas avaient été conçues pour être habitables toute l’année. À l’instar d’autres aristocrates romains. Pline, lorsqu’il visitait une villa, suivait des intérêts d’ordre économique. Ses séjours étaient planifiés pour coïncider avec les travaux majeurs de l’année agricole, en premier lieu les vendanges. Ils avaient aussi pour but de contrôler la rentabilité agricole de ses propriétés.
