Abstract
Cet article s'intéresse à la manière dont le roman Je m'en vais (1999), de l'auteur français Jean Echenoz, interroge l'indifférence contemporaine envers un ailleurs devenu plus accessible et l'écart toujours significatif entre sa réalité et ses représentations. En s'attachant aux procédés fictionnels qui soulignent et dénoncent à la fois la simplification du lointain (en l'occurrence, le Nord canadien), il présente la façon dont l'œuvre crée un « effet de romanesque » qui aménage une place pour un véritable exotisme. On constate que le roman s'attache au malaise du sujet contemporain et à sa manière « vectorielle » de voyager, qu'on peut opposer au voyage indirect, dont la lecture est le modèle littéraire par excellence.
