Abstract
Resumo: partindo de algumas lacunas analíticas de Florestan Fernandes acerca da distribuição espacial dos Tupinambá, especialmente quanto aos chamados Tupinambá “do interior”, este artigo objetiva refletir historicamente sobre um conjunto de fontes usado pelo autor na
 elaboração de seus argumentos; a partir disso, apresentam-se outras questões: primeiro, sobre o deslocamento desses grupos humanos enquanto um dos efeitos do colonialismo; e segundo, o uso indígena dos etnônimos enquanto ações políticas mais amplas, apropriado por eles em contextos de instabilidade na América portuguesa no âmago da expansão colonial.
