Abstract
L’archéologie s’intéresse non pas au passé, mais aux vestiges matériels qui subsistent du passé. Elle intervient non pas seulement sur des monuments, ou des œuvres d’art, mais surtout sur des « choses », qui sont les débris de ce que nous produisons, consommons ou transformons. À ce titre, l’archéologie étudie ce qui subsiste, matériellement, du passé dans le présent. Plutôt qu’à l’histoire, prise dans son sens traditionnel – reconstituer le passé tel qu’il était à l’origine – l’archéologie est davantage confrontée à la mémoire : non pas exactement la mémoire des hommes, mais plus exactement les héritages de formes que transmettent les choses et qui constituent la mémoire des lieux et des objets.
