La desensibilización sistemática (DS) es una técnica dirigida a reducir las respuestas de ansiedad y las conductas motoras de evitación ante determinados estímulos. Se trata de una de las técnicas pioneras en modificación de conducta, propuesta por Wolpe en los años cincuenta (Labrador, 2008). El supuesto de este procedimiento es que existen determinados estímulos que generan, de forma automática, respuestas de ansiedad en la persona, y pretende que esos mismos estímulos provoquen, también de manera automática, respuestas incompatibles con la ansiedad. De esta forma se impide el desarrollo de la ansiedad y la puesta en marcha de la evitación.
