Abstract
Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, vingt six camps d’internement furent mis en place sur le territoire canadien. Cet article entend aborder cette thématique complexe qui fut trop souvent l’objet de simplification mémorielle. Plus précisément, cette recherche tente d’éclairer les politiques d’internement mises en œuvre par le gouvernement canadien, mais aussi les pratiques et les modalités de ces différentes mesures au regard du camp de Petawawa, en Ontario. Ce dernier reçu dans un premier temps des « étrangers ennemis », des membres du Parti communiste et des citoyens suspectés de fascisme. Puis le camp hébergea des Canadiens d’origine japonaise, mais aussi des membres de la marine marchande ennemie, ainsi que des soldats et officiers allemands. En s’appuyant en grande partie sur les archives du ministère de la Défense nationale, on examinera ici le camp de Petawawa, souvent négligé dans l’historiographie.
