Abstract
Understanding voluntarism in an era of globalization, state restructuring, and demographic ageing has become a key research and policy challenge in the twenty‐first century. Across the world, and in countries of the Global North in particular, the voluntary sector has evolved into a source of welfare provisioning alongside the state, as well as a space of resistance at local, subnational, and international levels. Over the past four decades, the spatially uneven landscapes of voluntarism and the place‐specific nature of voluntary sector organizations and volunteering have become increasingly clear. There is growing recognition of the crucial difference geography makes to understanding the processes, outcomes, and implications of voluntary sector activities within particular contexts (from the metropolitan to the remote) and among various scales (from the global to the individual).
